Brand Building with Web Design
Very exciting weekend on the CuriousHomes project front!
The main focus at the moment is on the website’s design and the brand building that goes with it.
I found that my head is full of conceps and ideas but it’s not easy when you need to take into consideration web usability, SEO best practices, prettiness as well as the site’s vision and personality.
In the last couple of days I’ve been doing a bit of digging on the subject: there’s still a lot of work to do but the concept is there.
My paint focus at the moment is on its uniqueness. I want visitors to visually remember my site! Since I’ll be competing with multi-million pound companies (the joy!), if I want my website to do well commecially, I must differentiate from competitors in all aspects and stand out from the crowd.
What will probably help me at this stage is the fact that most affiliate webmasters (especially niche ones) tend to buy off the shelf templates and themes and customise them slightly. I’m redisigning the whole lot (well, I project manage, plan and make coffee; my geeky and sexy boyfriend does the coding) and I’m hoping that putting in the extra effort will pay off in the long term.
Below are a few examples of cute web designs that I love and I feel truly communicate the idea behind the brand:

Innocent Drinks - one of my all time favourites. It shouts playfulness and semplicity. Love the tone of voice too!

Lucia Soto - Spanish graphic designer and great example of self branding.

Get London Reading - Refreshingly different.

Notonthehighstreet - Good example of how you can send a clear message to your visitors just by using your products pictures.

The Little Cake Parlour - Love the vintage/shabby chic feel to this website!
The asteroid that could kill us all
I’ve recently bought The Universe - Complete Season 1 (love it!) and was totally fascinated by the documentary about an asteroid that could potentially destroy planet Earth in just over 25 years time.
Discovered in 2004, the asteroid, called Apophis (the spirit of destruction in ancient Egypt - men being positive as ever), is 390m wide and will pass close to the Earth on 13th April 2029.
If everything goes well, the Earth will deflect the asteroid and we’ll all carry on our lives as normal. If it passes thru a particular point in space, this will set up a collision with our planet on 13th April 2036 which, by the way, is going to be a Friday.
Bear in mind that this would potentially release more than 100,000 times the nuclear blast over Hiroshima.
To cut a long story short, it sounds like scientists will be able to determine exactly what’s going to happen in 2029. There’s one chance in 48,000 that the asteroid could kill us all, which makes this more likely than dying in an aiplane accident. Meh.
Tragedy aside, I am actually very excited as Apophis will be the first asteroid in human history to be visile to the naked eye. Plus I’m hoping I’ll have a bloody good telescope by then!
I’m now curious to read more about what scientists are actually monitoring and planning to do if things do go wrong…
Insanity is simply doing the same things over and over again, expecting a different result!
